Masala Puri – Gujarati Recipe

Hello Again

Been long since I posted a Traditional Gujarati Recipe & I am surprised by the number of requests I have received for the same. A Big Thankyou to All of you !! Please keep the requests flowing, they are definitely treasured.

We Gujaratis love our flatbreads be it Rotlis, Bhakris, Puris, Theplas, Rotla. They satiate us like none other & we relish them with tea in the mornings, lunch or even evening snacks or dinner.

Gujarati Masala Puri

Today I am going to share the Gujarati Recipe of my Favourite Gujarati Masala Puri which is one of the easiest to prepare & so delicious. This puri reminds me of my Nani House where all of us cousins ( we are quite a lot ) used to have these for breakfast & my Nani would serve us piping Hot Puris. I really don’t know how she managed it but yes we had a new breakfast each day of our stay !! I think she’s definitely reading this from her place in Heaven ❤

Masala Puri may not be the favourite dish of any dietician as its fully fried but you have your cheat days, don’t you? A Simple, Quick & Easy Recipe which can be made in a jiffy & can be relished either with Tea or Aloo/Potato Subji & believe me its the best especially in the Monsoon or Winters !!

Ingredients —

  1. 2 cups whole wheat flour
  2. 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  3. 1 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
  4. 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida
  5. salt to taste
  6. 1 tbsp oil
  7. Water to knead the dough
  8. Oil for deep frying

Method —

Mix all the ingredients in a deep bowl.

Add enough water to make into a semihard dough & it should be smooth.

Keep aside for 15 mins.

Make small balls of it.

Roll it out into small circles ( not very thin nor very thick )

Heat oil in a pan.

When the oil is hot enough, add the rolled puris in the hot oil on a medium flame ( if you add in very hot oil, they will not puff up & get burnt)

The puris will begin to puff up & when they are golden in colour, remove them on a tissue to drain out the excess oil.

Masala Puri

Serve immediately with Hot Masala Chai or Batata nu Shaak/ Potato Subji.

You can even carry these for a one day picnic & trust me they taste awesome.

If you want to make these for either Lunch or dinner with Aloo Subji as I have said earlier & have some curds & pickle with it, it will be amazing !!

Hope you enjoyed this Recipe & let me know which is Recipe you want me to post !!
