Being a Gujarati myself I love food as all Gujaratis usually do and something that takes you back to your Culture ,to your Roots, is something what I cherish..

Born in a family from the Surat Navsari part of Gujarat and married into a family which has the maternal side from Rajkot Gujarat… I always joke that  I have entered the Red zone from the Green zone ..you must be wondering what I am talking about but this is so true as the Surat side of Gujarat you usually get all the vegetables cooked in a green masala whereas the Rajkot or the kathiyawad side has everything in red masala….

So when I was invited by Rushina to the ongoing Kathiyawadi festival at SOAM Restaurant Mumbai I was thrilled… I knew I was in for some great food… But it was not only great food awaiting  us but some Great hospitality by the owner and his daughter Pinky Chandan Dikshit who simply enthralled us..

Kathiyawad or Saurashtra is located in western India on the Arabian sea coast of Gujarat state ..it touches Rann of Kutch on the north so the food in both the regions tends to be similar .. The Kathis of Kathiyawad is a distinct group also known as Kathiyawadi..
Since Saurashtra has huge amount of dry land, Kathiyawadi food is a little dry due to lack of water & hence lentils & root vegetables play a significant role in this cuisine…

Kathiyawadi food is varied and quiet popular in Mumbai.. it is quite spicy Unlike the Gujarati Thali… This month the sobo restaurant Soam has organised A Kathiyawadi food festival to give the city foodies the opportunity to savour this amazing cuisine..

Dakor na Gota.. lentil fritters local to the region of Dakor in Gujarat served with yoghurt

Katiyawadi Dahi Wada… Spicy Kathiyawadi style wadas smothered with yoghurt and date chutney..

Panchmel Dhokla ….A medley of 5 lentils soaked and fermented to make a delicious steamed Dhokla…

Paneer Spinach Samoas… A yummy combination of paneer & spinach in a Samosa…
MAIN COURSE…

Vaal & Kand with Puris… Sautéed white butter beans and purple yam simmered in its juices, served with Puris..

Lasaniya Ringna Batata with Chopdas…. Baby aubergines & potatoes simmered in a Tangy garlicky blend Of Spices, served with whole wheat Laccha parathas..

Kandha gathiya Nu Shaak with Chopdas… Green onions and garlic sautéed with spicy sev served with whole wheat parathas..

Shrikhand with Batata nu Shaak served with Puris..

Undhiyu with Puris.. a delicacy made of winter vegetables ,Undhiyu comprises Surti Papdi, purple yam, sweet potatoes ,banana, Arya kakdi ,brinjals and muthiya( steamed and fried wheat balls )all slow cooked in the masala of green garlic, green chillies ,coriander and grated coconut..

Motichoor Golgappe… Puris dipped in Saffron syrup filled with rabdi and Boondi..

The Food was cooked to Perfection & the Flavour of every ingredient was felt whole heartedly… The AROMA of the Food was TILTILATING..

Besides this amazing Kathiyawadi menu they also have a regular menu which is full of Deliciousness and Delight…
